NAS in a Can

so here is version 1 of the NAS i was building earlier. some notes:
- i originally was going to create some kind of case with wood or lexan but i got lazy. the project sat on a bench untouched because everything else was working.
- i kinda wanted to get this done, every time i glanced at it, i was thinking of things i could use as a makeshift case. i then thought of using a small DSC alarm can. did some quick placements and everything ended up fitting so i drilled out some holes and screwed the components inside the can.
- i am happy with the finished product. i will eventually paint the can a matte black and add some stenciling in gold(?). i also would like to add a 20x4 LCD to show hostname, disk space, and temperature onto the door of the NAS.
- i am going to drill out some vent holes for better airflow. i will monitor temperatures and if required, install an extra fan inside of the can.
- to secure the door, i will be installing a camlock on the door. the door also has holes for screws…

mini pc's

the eee pc is a special variant, it's a 700 with the secondary "propriatary" mini pcie slot to install another Asus ssd (similar to msata but 2 pins reversed lol). this version was recalled quickly and resold without this connector, marketed as 701 4g. wouldn't be until the 8G came out and then the 701sdx later on that added it back. i have previously done a touchscreen mod to it, add internal Bluetooth, replaced stock wifi with wifi-n card, and install secondary Asus ssd (only 8gb it's all i could find). it was my first x86 mini PC in 2007 and still works today.

i have owned the dell axim x51v since 2005. in my town only rich people had data plans on their phone. i was too cheap for a phone and these plans so public wifi was how it was done. this thing was so awesome and had many features. it really was my first venture into mobile computing. from modding the "desktop" to flashing custom roms, messaging friends and using Skype to call people anywhere …

T100TA 32GB Recovery Partition Notes

some users might have to send their T100TA to ASUS for repair. when they get it back, they find out that their SSD has a new 8GB recovery partition on it, and wasnt there before. the 32GB T100TA actually contains a hidden 8GB recovery drive embedded inside of the unit, and is only unhidden when a user performs a system refresh or reset. on a 64GB T100TA, the recovery partition is on the SSD itself and as such, this variant doesnt have an embedded recovery drive like the 32GB version. there have been 2 confirmed users who have received their units back from ASUS restored back to the original, proper way; myself being one of them.

how to unhide this partition:

bring up the charms bar, open Search and type in Recovery select Recovery Options underneath the Refresh section, click "Get started" as soon as the banner with "Preparing" appears, press cancel right away close this and enter Disk Managment (diskmgmt.msc) you should see a new Disk that is 7.04GB in capacity wit…
