NAS in a Can

so here is version 1 of the NAS i was building earlier. some notes: - i originally was going to create some kind of case with wood or lexan but i got lazy. the project sat on a bench untouched because everything else was working. - i kinda wanted to get this done, every time i glanced at it, i was thinking of things i could use as a makeshift case. i then thought of using a small DSC alarm can. did some quick placements and everything ended up fitting so i drilled out some holes and screwed the components inside the can. - i am happy with the finished product. i will eventually paint the can a matte black and add some stenciling in gold(?). i also would like to add a 20x4 LCD to show hostname, disk space, and temperature onto the door of the NAS. - i am going to drill out some vent holes for better airflow. i will monitor temperatures and if required, install an extra fan inside of the can. - to secure the door, i will be installing a camlock on the door. the door also has holes for sc

project update

i went to rugged air, paid 50bux to get some lexan pieces cut to create a mounting solution for the nas. took a similar route as I did for the Google photos downloader. my cuts were a little too big so i trimmed them down. i mounted each hard drive to a plate, and stacked them on top of each other with m2.5 brass standoffs. on top of the hard drives, the raspberry pi was mounted on another plate. 2x 2tb hdds + rPi 4 i decided to mount everything temporarily to a piece of lexan 10x4.5 for the time being so I can get an idea whether I want to use the wood or continue using lexan for the rest of the build. prototyping the nas. each component is mounted together. i just received a left angle USB 3 a to micro b cable as well as an rj45 panel mount. need to start working on rear panel next. also need to find out what to purchase locally should I continue to use lexan for the build. i hope whomever is reading this enjoys this and my progress. this has become a new hobby, building things.

Nexus 7 and USB OTG: my experiences

this is going to be a long post as there is some backstory to explain. before christmas 2012, my sister ended up dropping her nexus 7, and as a result, the glass/digitizer had cracked. my mother ended up giving it to me in hopes of me fixing it. well, when i received the unit, i initially thought that it wasn't a big deal. but after charging and powering on the device, 3/4's of screen would not recognize any touch input. so at this point, what do i do with it? keep it? keeping it wasn't a bad idea. i searched for replacement digitizers on ebay, hoping to find something good, but i only found overpriced parts. the reason for this is because the glass is fused to the LCD panel. not too happy about that. at this rate, it would make more sense to purchase a new nexus 7 tablet. but i didnt want to. i'm not the guy to throw something away if it still has use, and that is how i viewed the broken tablet. i am not in a position to drop a bunch of money on a new tabl
